Kenwood eXcelon DNX6960 Review

Here is one of the honest Kenwood Excelon DNX6960 review by Ken Andrews “rsoandrew” (USA), that already purchase and use this Receiver.
DNX6960 for 5 Star Nice integrated nav unit.
I primarily bought this unit because it has integrated Garmin navigation and had decent reviews. I’ve had it installed for about 3 weeks now and it has not disappointed me. It also passes the non-techie spouse test. My wife’s only comment has been ‘I really like the iPod integration.’ Not a single negative nor did I spend any time with her teaching her how to use it. She was already familiar with the Garmin Nav user interface.
One of the reviews on here mentioned slow response times with the iPod. When researching the unit, I read about problems people had with so called OEM cables. Based on the reviews, I made sure I spent the extra money for a genuine Kenwood iPod cable. There is no lag with iPod integration.
Another tip is to buy the Cable Jive Universal Dock Converter. Because the Kenwood Nav uses a normal USB port for the iPod integration, you can use this to convert the 30 pin iPod connector back to a normal female USB port. This will allow you to use MP3s or iPods with the unit while burying all the cables in the dash for a clean install. It also allows you to put on new startup screens, for example, without pulling the head unit.
All in all I’ve very happy with the unit. My two biggest gripes are 1) The boot up is a little slow. Takes about 20 second from the time you start the car until it is ready to go. It takes about 5 seconds after you start the car before it even looks like it is doing anything (the panel lights remain dark). 2) You can’t hide inputs you don’t have. For example I have Sirius but not HD radio. When I hit source, it shows me both (actually all the inputs). It is easy, however, to switch between Nav and the current audio inputs though. You just touch a bar at the bottom of the screen.
Update: So I’ve had the unit installed for about a month. I changed the rating to 5 stars. This unit is great and does everything you could want. I just updated it with the traffic module so I get real-time traffic on the GPS. The slow boot time isn’t really an issue anymore (just used to it) and I don’t notice the source input.
